Ironically for a community that has pioneered renewable energy – until the wind proved too much for its wind turbine – it has been left dependent on one 25kw diesel generator, providing rationed power from 7.30am to midnight.
Now thanks to a lottery fund grant of just under £200,000, for the first time the Foula Electricity Trust will soon be able to provide a reliable and affordable electricity scheme across the island, 20 miles west of Shetland.
At last the lights will stay on for Foula’s 32 folk (via The Herald)

They say it's shaped like a ball.Currently, the propellers are powered by gasoline engines that rotate up and down to fly the airship and hold it in position. They also can spin it on its axis, provide lift, or land without the large ground crew and moorings required by blimps.
Developers are considering diesel generators mounted inside the airship to run electrically powered propellers that would improve performance and maneuverability. Trial Balloon: Military Blimps

Rural China gets on the grid: The Niyi township government donated the diesel generator -- the village is too far above the river for hydro -- but keeping it running is the responsibility of the locals. Twice a year, each of the nine families of the village must trudge down the gorge to the road to buy diesel fuel, then carry it home on the back of a donkey. Each household contributes about $4 per month to cover the costs. Out of the Dark in Rural China (via MSNBC)
